The party ponders an ancient cave unearthed by a landslide, following Kethsar's tale of an axe lost to his people long ago that legends told was used to great effect against Kas' undead armies in the Uttermost war. Primitive cave paintings are marked by Norse runes that give evidence of vikings of Ostland shipwrecked here in ancient times who regressed in isolation. A huge undead giant and diminutive creature riding a broom are spotted roaming the Duskmoon Hills at night while the party sleeps unnoticed in the painted cave. The group descends a sinkhole that plunges hundreds of feet into the earth, discovering geothermal vent at it's bottom and a hidden tunnel to the viking's burial chamber. A pit trap filled with huge coral snakes under the room of bones is narrowly averted and a long lava tube pursued to a pit of green slime where Kethsar and Farmen's wolf are prevented from following Flynn, Faerin and Farmen across for fear of their lives. Beyond reveals a wondrous cavern where crystals the size of men grow hidden for centuries. An underground stream leads to an ancient statue and altar to Odin. And though no axe is discovered, Flynn puzzles the mystery of a holy drinking horn hidden under the altar that allows the drinkers to breath the water of the underground river as if it wewre air. With dogged persistence, Flynn leads the remaining group through miles and hours underwater and deep beneath the earth to a cave complex of a very different nature. They are discovered by strange subterranean humanoids calling themselves Grimlocks, and plead for their freedom before chief Agok, who leads his people's in a mining operation of unknown purpose. In exchange for their lives, the party gives over their huge crystals and agrees to lead the grimlocks to the crystal cave, but when Agok demands their weapons, the party stages a desperate escape.
