Warjourn has been separated from the group bound for the Painted Cave, swept down the Oldrock River in a failed attempt to cross hastily while fleeing goblins. He is washed into the northern boughs of the Penprie Forest where he makes camp to dry his gear, not realizing that goblins approach through the woods silently as the hours pass. Breaking camp to return to the plains south of the Duskmoon Hills to recover his Kank, he is waylaid by ambushing Goblins. But the attackers quickly become the attacked as Warjourn vanquishes the lot, save one which he interrogates. After learning that the Goblins serve a creature called The Barghest who dwells in a brick house to the west, the existence of Orc caves along Fools Pass, of Branbolton the Giant, and other tales as well, Warjourn slays the goblin cruelly, lest he return news of his passing.

Making his way into the plains under the cover of sooty night, Warjourn quickly becomes disoriented, then lost. Spying a lantern perusing him through the dark night, he attempts to evade, though it becomes clear that whatever tails him is more adept traversing the snowy night than a blind warforged. He is finally tracked down and caught by The Witch Taker and his talking wolf, considering a foolish flight deeper into the hills, he resigns himself to surrender, and is taken two days down Trader's Way and returned to the gates of Rushbury Mound.

Inside the dreaded city of the walking dead, he is quickly taken to the walled government district and given into the possession of the Sisters of Tender Mercy who summarily throw him in a mechanized prison with little hope of escape. He is tortured to reveal the names of the other fugitives, their origins and purposes, though it would seem that the Sister knows not of the Druidic Sanctuary; he is neither asked nor speaks of its existence. Saved by his complicity, he is released to the slave market, and bought along with his seized possessions by one Father Beamus and taken to the Temple of St. Solonus…
