Merth was the Sherif of Mitra’s Curse and unholy guardian of the clergy of Set for centuries when the Conqueror’s Brigade first encountered him as the story of Dark Tower began. His run ins with the Conqueror’s Brigade are many and storied. Some highlights are when John challenged him in the Dark Tower rat tunnels where Kalanen appeared and gave John Sureguard to wield so that he would win the duel. This act apparently had a profound impression on Merth, who for hundreds of years in service of Set had never been touched by the personal hand of his god, but rather had been sickened by the treachery of the clergy. Something awoke in Merth then, a memory of ancient times before he turned to wickedness and evil when he knew honor as a Lion of Mitra. Afterwards Merth sought John out who opened a portal to the Cryptic Citadel with a prayer and brought Merth before Kalanen where Merth sued for knighthood and was given John to duel for the title. John bested him, though in part due to magics he had taken from Merth after his defeat in the rat tunnels. Merth sued for quarter which was not given by Kelanen and John slew Merth. A latter mystery ensued when Merth’s body went missing and Ralibarn accused John of foul play.
Later, John, and Dur-Adn observed the skeleton of Merth fighting in Powatoc’s entourage when he dueled Kalanen and the Sword of the Sightless Eye was disarmed and stolen by Kalanen. It was later discovered that after the duel with John someone in the Cryptic Citadel had taken Merth’s body through a viewing portal to the Dead Lands.
Recently Jebbin has learned that Lum crafted his soul to be bound up in a magical circlet that is born by one of his court wizards, Andrei Dunlor. Merth approached Jebbin in Urdistau and beseeched him to take the circlet from Andrei, pledging in return that Merth would protect Jebbin & Julnar as long as they travel the Dead Lands. Unfortunately Jebbin lost his magical duel with Andrei and was sent on to The Dead City of Leum by Andrei for reasons unknown, although Lucius Blackburn suspects it was the result of a telepathic message from Louant.
